How to Improve Indoor Air Quality During Arizona Winters

Winter in Arizona may not bring snow to most areas, but it does come with its own unique challenges for maintaining indoor air quality. Here are some tips to help you breathe easier this winter.

Replace Filters Regularly:

Over time, filters can become clogged with dust, pet dander, and other airborne particles. Replacing your filters every 1–3 months ensures cleaner air and helps your system run more efficiently. Consider using HEPA or high-efficiency filters for optimal air purification.

Ventilate When Possible:

On milder days, open windows or doors for a short period to allow fresh air to circulate. This helps remove indoor pollutants and refreshes the air.

Keep Ductwork Clean:

Schedule professional duct cleaning to remove buildup and ensure your system is circulating clean air.

Add Air Purifiers:

Air purifiers can capture small particles that your HVAC filter might miss, such as allergens, smoke, and mold spores. Look for purifiers with a HEPA filter for the best results.

Be Mindful of Pollutants:

Avoid burning candles with synthetic fragrances, limit the use of harsh cleaning chemicals, and ensure proper ventilation when cooking. Switching to natural cleaning products can also help reduce airborne irritants.

Use A Humidifier:

Low humidity can irritate your skin, throat, and respiratory system. Adding a humidifier to your home can help maintain ideal humidity levels (30-50%), making the air more comfortable and reducing airborne dust.

Check For Carbon Monoxide:

Heating systems, fireplaces, and gas appliances can produce carbon monoxide (CO), a dangerous odorless gas. It is important to install carbon monoxide detectors in your home and test them regularly to ensure your family’s safety.

Schedule an HVAC Tune-Up:

Regular maintenance of your HVAC system ensures it’s running efficiently and not contributing to indoor air quality issues. An HVAC professional can inspect and clean your system, replace filters, and identify any potential problems.

Introduce Indoor Plants:

Certain houseplants, like spider plants and peace lilies, act as natural air purifiers. They can help filter toxins from the air while adding a touch of greenery to your home. Be sure to choose low-maintenance plants that thrive indoors.

(divided: 1/2 cup for dough, 1 cup for coating)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup finely chopped pecans
  • 1 cup unsalted butter,

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with

  • Add the finely chopped pecans by gently folding them into the dough, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout.
  • Shape the cookies by scooping out tablespoon-sized portions of dough and rolling them into small balls. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart.
  • Bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes, or until the bottoms turn a light golden brown while the tops remain pale. Let them cool on the baking sheet for 2-3 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
